Willpower
What we call "willpower" is merely a label we apply after the fact to explain our choices. In reality, we don't have a magical reserve of mental strength that we can summon to resist temptation. Instead, we have competing preferences that battle for dominance in each moment. When you choose the chocolate cake over your diet plan, it's not because your willpower "failed" – it's simply because your preference for immediate pleasure outweighed your preference for long-term health benefits. Understanding this truth liberates us from the shame of supposed willpower deficiencies and points us toward the real solution: consciously reshaping our preferences rather than trying to conjure up an imaginary force that doesn't exist.
