René Girards foundational model revealing the three-way structure of human desire: Subject, Model, and Object. Unlike simple appetite (I want food because I'm hungry), desire is always mediated through another person we admire or imitate. We don't desire things directlywe desire them because someone we look up to desires them first. The "triangle" shows how our desires flow from us (Subject) toward what we want (Object) but are always channeled through someone else (Model/Mediator) who shows us what to want.

This triangular structure explains why desire is inherently social and imitative rather than individual and spontaneous. The closer we get to our modelwhether in social proximity or similaritythe more intense the rivalry becomes, as we compete for the same objects of desire. This creates what Girard calls "mimetic crisis," where the model becomes simultaneously our guide and our obstacle. Understanding this pattern helps explain everything from consumer behavior and career ambition to romantic relationships and cultural trends.
