The Idiot Index

At SpaceX, Elon Musk deployed what he called the "idiot index" to revolutionize rocket manufacturing. This ratio compared a component's total cost to its raw materials cost—a high ratio meant inefficient design or manufacturing. When Musk personally took over as VP of propulsion to reduce Raptor engine costs, he demonstrated this principle in a tense meeting with financial analyst Lucas Hughes. "If you don't step on toes, I will fire you," Musk warned before grilling Hughes on the worst-performing parts. When Hughes couldn't identify that a $13,000 nozzle jacket was made from just $200 of steel, Musk's verdict was swift: "You have very badly failed." In Musk's world, knowing your numbers isn't just good practice—it's survival.
